Speakers Bios:

Dr Vidya Navaratnam

Dr Vidya Navaratnam is a respiratory physician with an interest in interstitial lung disease (ILD) at SCGH and an epidemiologist. Her undergraduate medical degree and most of her postgraduate medical training was in the UK. She undertook a PhD in IPF epidemiology with Professor Richard Hubbard at the University of Nottingham and consolidated her epidemiology training by completing the Masters in Epidemiology at the prestigious London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, where she was awarded a distinction.  

She moved to Australia in 2018 to undertake an NIHR Postdoctoral Research Fellowship with Prof Anne Chang on Indigenous Lung Health. She then completed a two-year clinical fellowship in Lung Transplantation, Pulmonary Hypertension and Interstitial Lung Disease at The Prince Charles Hospital, Brisbane. 

Dr Navaratnam is Principle Investigator for commercial and investigator led studies at the Institute for Respiratory Health and is the epidemiological advisory member of the Australasian Interstitial Lung Disease Steering Committee.

Lisa is the Clinical Nurse Consultant (CNC) for Interstitial Lung Disease (ILD) at Sir Charles Gardner Hospital (SCGH). She is the specialised nursing point of contact for patients who require regular lung function, pathology and radiological investigations to track what is ultimately a progressive illness. Patients are offered complex drug therapies, requiring dose titration and management of uncomfortable side effects. Providing an outpatient care pathway, she is focused on helping patients live well with their progressive lung disease and focuses on keeping patients healthier and out of hospital.

Associate Professor Cecilia Prêle

Associate Professor Prêle is a Principal Research Fellow and Head of Tissue Repair and Fibrosis Group at the Institute for Respiratory Health. She is also Associate Professor in Pathology at Murdoch University. 

A/Prof Prêle completed her PhD at University College London in the UK and following a postdoctoral position at Guy’s and St Thomas’s Hospital and King College London she moved to Perth in 2002. Her research focuses on understanding the body’s response to damage, specifically on inflammation and the development of fibrosis, and the mechanisms responsible for regulating tissue repair following injury. Her research team, together with their collaborators, have identified some of the signal transduction pathways that influence how cells within the lung behave. Recently they have shown that immune cells play a role in shaping the local lung environment in IPF, providing the cues and signals that may be responsible for the excessive fibrosis. They have since identified a subset of IPF patients with a specific immune phenotype and are investigating the potential benefit of immunotherapy approaches in lung fibrosis. A/Prof Prêle sits on the Board of Directors for the Thoracic Society of Australia and New Zealand, is a member of the International Colloquium on lung and airway fibrosis leadership committee and is a Deputy Editor for Respirology.
