Speakers

Paediatrics
Presenter: Dr Adelaide Withers
Bio: Dr Adelaide Withers is a respiratory and sleep consultant at Perth Children’s Hospital and a researcher in the Children’s Lung Health Team at Telethon Kids Institute. She is currently completing her PhD investigating factors predicting the onset of respiratory failure in children with neuromuscular disorders and is the respiratory clinical lead for the neuromuscular service. She is part of the complex airway team with vast experience in managing children with complex obstructive sleep apnoea, airway anomalies and those requiring tracheostomy insertion and ventilation. Her other research interests include tracheobronchomalacia in cystic fibrosis, use of humidified high flow oxygen during aeromedical transfer and novel technologies for diagnosing obstructive sleep apnoea. She is the co-host of the Child and Adolescent Health Service Podcast, Kids Health Matters, where she discusses topics such as sleep problems in children and vaping. 

Basic Science
Presenter: Dr Renee Ng
Bio: Dr Renee Ng is a BrightSpark Early Career Fellow in the Airway Epithelial Research Group at the Wal-yan Respiratory Research Centre as well as the Production Manager of Phage WA. Her research primarily focuses on the development and production of phages at medicinal grade to treat people with antimicrobial resistance bacterial infections. She is also investigating the potential of combination therapy with phages, existing antimicrobials, and adjuvants to maximise treatment efficacy and ultimately improve antimicrobial stewardship.    

Infectious Diseases
Presenter: Dr Tim Whitmore
Bio: Dr Tim Whitmore is a dual trained Respiratory & Infectious Diseases Physician, practicing at Royal Perth Hospital and the WA TB Control program. He currently conducts research into mycobacterial disease, runs the state NTM forum and sits on national antibiotic guideline panels.  He has a particular interest in complex pulmonary and extra-pulmonary mycobacterial infections, along with bronchiectasis and respiratory infections in immunocompromised hosts.

Lung Cancer
Presenter: Dr Dhaval Thakkar
Bio: Dr Dhaval Thakkar is a respiratory consultant with advanced training in interventional bronchoscopy and pleural disease management. He uses minimally invasive techniques in diagnosing and treating different diseases in the chest, offering a variety of different procedures using the latest technologies. 

His clinical focus is in lung cancer and co-chairs the weekly Lung Cancer multi-disciplinary meeting. Besides managing lung cancer he is passionate about managing complex benign airways and pleural diseases.

He has international experience having completed his medical training in the US and is board certified in practicing internal medicine, pulmonary and critical care medicine, and interventional pulmonology. His academic pursuits include trainee education and mentorship, including fellowship training. His clinical interests are in utilizing technology to improve healthcare and is fascinated by the intersection of medicine and biotechnology.

He values the importance of being able to communicate complex medical information and takes great pride in having his patients leave his clinic visit with a better and deeper understanding of their disease process.
