The ERS Congress held in Milan, Italy on 9-11th September 2023 is an annual event which brings together respiratory experts from all around the world to present the latest advancements in respiratory medicine and science. This online live education meeting is a chance to learn about the key takeaways and updates from the ERS Congress in relation to 3 different topics. ERS Congress Hot Topics and Updates
Chair
Professor Christine Jenkins has a strong commitment to respiratory practice and clinical research, particularly in the management of asthma and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). She is the Professor of Respiratory Medicine at the University of New South Wales Sydney and heads the Respiratory Group at The George Institute for Global Health, Sydney, Australia. She is also Clinical Professor at Concord Clinical School, the University of Sydney. Professor Jenkins has played major roles in advocacy and leadership for lung health in Australia, has over 250 publications including three books, and has contributed to respiratory guidelines in Australia and internationally. She has made significant contributions to the community sector through senior leadership positions for government, health professional and not-for-profit organisations. She was awarded Member, Order of Australia in 2002 for Services to Respiratory Medicine, was President of the Thoracic Society of Australia and New Zealand from 2007-2009, and Chair of Lung Foundation Australia from 2016 – 2021.
Speakers
Senani Rathnayake is a molecular biologist and bioinformatician specialising in respiratory diseases, and a PhD respiratory researcher at UTS and Woolcock Institute for Medical Research. Specialising in multi-omics, Senani is an ERS short-term fellowship awardee for 2023 to embark on a project using large single-cell RNA sequencing patient cohorts to understand patient-specific treatment responses in biologic therapies for Asthma. Senani's combination of laboratory and bioinformatics skills enables a flexible and dynamic investigation of disease-relevant mechanisms supported by validation using various laboratory cell models. Senani has been involved in various publications of peer-reviewed journals relating to molecular biology and bioinformatics for respiratory diseases.
Alan James is a Clinical Professor at the School of Pharamacology and Medicine, University of Western Australia, a Consultant Physician in Respiratory and Sleep Medicine in the Department of Pulmonary Physiology and Sleep Medicine at Sir Charles Gardiner Hospital Western Australia and is the Chair of Busselton Population Medical Research Institute. Alan has been invited as a speaker and lecturer at a local, national and international level for many years, due to his highly regarded expertise across many areas of respiratory health such as Pulmonary Physiology and Sleep Medicine, airway smooth muscle remodeling in Asthma, Pathophysiology, management and treatment of Asthma.
Doctor Paul Lilburn is a respiratory staff specialist at Prince of Wales Hospital and a conjoint lecturer at UNSW, with special interests in Interventional Pulmonology, Advanced Lung Diseases, Respiratory Infections and exploring ways to develop Global Health Partnerships. Paul completed fellowship of Interventional Pulmonology at Macquarie University, has been involved in Cone Beam CT cases, is heavily involved in the training of respiratory medicine advanced trainees in bronchoscopy at the Prince of Wales, and has published numerous peer reviewed articles on Interventional Pulmonology in the last 12 months.
